Floral venture blooms at St John's

TYNWALD Mills is the setting for a new concept in floral design, brought to life by 29-year-old designer and horticulturist Heidi Baker.

Heidi studied at Writtle College, Chelmsford, for a foundation degree in professional floristry and a BSc (Hons) degree in horticulture, and trained in top London florist shops before deciding to return to the Isle of Man to set up her own business.Heidi Baker

Heidi, of Ramsey, had lived in the Island since she was seven, only leaving for her university studies.

Her portfolio boasts a wide range of achievements, including being part of Writtle College's medal-winning teams at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2005, 2006 and 2008. She was invited to design a bouquet and present it to the Queen at the 2006 show.

Heidi has also had one of her wedding designs appear on the front page of the Society of Floristry magazine Focal Point and in the Fusion Flowers Wedding Magazine.

'We have a fresh delivery from Holland at least twice a week, so can order any flowers that the customer requires, providing they are in season,' said Heidi. 'We, as consumers, have become so used to getting fresh produce almost all the year round, and a lot of the sense of seasons has been lost.'

When Her Royal Highness visited the Isle of Man in 1990, she was presented with a small hand-tied posey of flowers by a small girl from the crowd, she carried it throughout and it took both HRH and the little girl by surprise that they'd meet again 16 years later!

The Queen, Prince Charles, theHeidi Sun Newspaper Duchess of Cornwall Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, all sa the stunning exhibit and heard about our new Acer, Sunshine.

The Queen joked that she hoped the pyramid, which won a coverted show Silver medal, would not collapse with the wind.

The stocks were grown by students at Writtle College, in Chelmsford, Essex. Floristry student Heidi Baker presented a posy of the new Hot Cakes blooms to Her Majesty.

Heidi also made a posy for the Duchess of Cornwall with a centrepiece rose called Abbeyfield Gold, named to celebrate 50 years of the Abbeyfield charity, which has the Prince of Wales as patron.
